Amazon.com Network Engineer in Dublin, Ireland
Amazon.com is looking to hire highly motivated, best-in-class Network Engineers for our Network Reliability team to drive the stability and sustainability of our next-generation networks and to discover innovative ways to automate and scale our network as we expand.
The ideal candidate will be expected to provide high quality first-tier network and network event management for Amazons worldwide network operations. He/she will demonstrate an excellent knowledge of networking and networking concepts and theory, and have experience participating in operational network support for a large-scale enterprise environment. He/she will have a proven track record of success in driving complex issues to resolution autonomously and/or collaboratively. A love for working with new technologies and pushing the envelope on existing technology is required.

Automate select network administration tasks through creation and maintenance of scripts and tools
Provide critical on-shift network operations support to Amazon.com customers to diagnose of large-scale networking events
Support and maintain our next generation data-center networks.
Deliver simple, sustainable and repeatable solutions and processes.
Drive and support innovation from the NIC to the core.
Reduce the end-to-end cost of delivering packets.
Partner with our broader Technical Operations organization to reduce operational burden.
Work closely with our Network Engineering teams to ensure fast, smooth roll-out of new designs and products.
Drive standards across the network and ensure that we are fully compliant to those standards and policies.
Monitor and manage communications during large-scale events utilizing an established Event Management process
Collaborate with level two and level-three resolvers
Identify and troubleshoot recurring platform issues. Effective escalation of same to mid- and senior-level engineering teams for full resolution
Create and review documentation and process regarding recurring issues, new standard operating procedures, knowledge transfer material, etc.
Troubleshoot networking, routing and interconnectivity issues, including troubleshooting of network device configuration and low level application interaction
Complete customer requests via Remedy trouble ticketing system
Mentor more junior staff in basic network administration, including involvement in the formulation of a structured training plan
Participation in entry level interviewing
Our ideal candidate is highly autonomous, very detail oriented, possesses strong written and verbal communication skills and has significant experience of supporting large scale, enterprise class networks. Excellent network implementation and troubleshooting skills combined with a proven documentation methodology is also required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and an ability to interact efficiently with peers and customers is required, as well as experience initiating, driving and managing in-event conference calls. The desire and ability to work in a fast paced, collaborative environment is essential. In addition to providing top-tier management and support of Amazons vast network infrastructure, Network Support Engineers are expected to build or enhance tools, develop best practices, refine operational procedure and constantly think pro-actively and with innovation.
A relevant degree in a related technical discipline or at least three years relevant experience in a large-scale network operations environment is preferred.
In-depth knowledge of and experience with major Internet routing protocols, BGP, OSPF.
Excellent Ethernet and IP networking knowledge and extensive experience in the application of IP protocols.
Substantial background in large scale datacenter network implementations and support.
Deep knowledge of network hardware and packet forwarding architectures.
Significant past experience with the following protocols and concepts: TCP/IP, TCP/IP Flow control, UDP, HSRP/VRRP/GLBP, DNS, ARP, HTTP, SSL, STP, Trunking, & Port Channeling, IPsec and TLS
In depth experience on Cisco IOS and Cisco hardware platforms
Experience working in virtualised enterprise networking environments
Excellent analytical skills
Must be comfortable working in a Linux/Unix environment.
Software development/programming/scripting skills are highly desired - specifically Perl, or shell (bash, ksh, csh)
Knowledge or awareness of IT best practice frameworks (ITIL, COBIT) and Operational Excellence concepts or methodologies is a plus
Other Qualifications & Responsibilities
Physical requirements - The ability to sit in front of computer for entire scheduled 12-hour shift with appropriate breaks while maintaining a high level of alertness and attention to detail.
Ability to move and lift computer equipment.
Must be able to work in a â€œfollow the sunâ€ shift (6am-6pm) across and including weekends and holidays.
Must be willing to support an off-hours, engagement only pager rotation.
Experience dealing with customers during problem resolution and operating efficiently under pressure.
Effective prioritization and time management.
