In Ireland, Abbott employs more than 3,200 people across 11 sites. Abbott has six manufacturing facilities located in Clonmel, Cootehill, Donegal, Longford and Sligo and a third party manufacturing management operation in Sligo. It has commercial operations in Dublin and shared services in Dublin and Westport. Abbott serves the Irish market with a diverse range of health care products including diagnostics, medical devices, nutritionals and branded generic pharmaceuticals. Abbott has been operating in Ireland since 1946.

Abbott Diagnostics Division (ADD) Longford

Abbott established the first diagnostics manufacturing facility in Sligo in 1994 to manufacture blood-screening products and reagents. In 2004, Abbott Diagnostics operations in Ireland expanded with the opening of a second facility in Longford. The plant was first occupied in December 2004. Manufacturing commenced in March of the following year and the first product (Architect TSH) was launched in December of 2005. The Longford facility plays a key role in helping Abbott to meet the increasing global demand for diagnostic testing in areas such as infectious disease, cancer, thyroid and cardiovascular diseases.

We currently have a vacancy for a Project Manager and this role will involve the following:

Primary Function

  • The project Manager’s prime responsibility is to ensure that the project delivers business change results within the specified tolerances of time, cost, quality, scope, risk and benefits.

  • The Project Manager is also responsible for the project producing a result capable of achieving the benefits defined in the program goals as set by the program Leadership team.

Major Responsibilities

  • Maintain ETMS TO DO LIST.

  • Conduct business in a manner that will protect human health, safety and the environment by complying with all applicable EHS laws, as well at the Abbott Global and Technical standards.

  • Responsible for leading CFTs in identification and execution of project activities to meet program goals and deliverables

  • Responsible for creating and maintaining a working environment for cross functional teams to deliver assigned projects activities and program milestones

  • Manage a group of multi-disciplined specialists (technical / engineering) and be accountable for all project support provided by staff, including cost estimates and project execution commitments for critical strategic projects.

  • Responsible for prioritization, problem solving, supporting resource management, communication and risk management of assigned Projects.

  • Responsible for the transfer of existing and where applicable new diagnostic and commodities to ADD Longford.

  • Provide a focal point to manage Product Portfolios and assign responsibilities across the manufacturing, technical, and quality organizations to deliver production plan, as applicable.

  • Liaise with Leadership team to ensure that work is neither overlooked nor duplicated by related projects.

  • Assesses project team capability and recommends specific actions to improve project performance and predictability. Provides coaching and feedback to project teams and management on their contribution to project outcomes.

  • Develop innovative approaches to Project Management and have very keen foresight to anticipate activities and events that may cause delay and develop and implement a plan to prevent the delay from occurring.

  • Ensure regulatory and compliance requirements are met for all projects.

  • Tailor and apply broad-based skill-set to facilitate efficient management of team activities and communication.

  • Develop, track, and communicate progress against deliverables and resource constraints.

  • Review and assess Project Plans with cross-functional Transfer Teams.

  • Ensure the behavioural expectations of team members are established in alignment with company values

  • Identify and communicate any project related issues to Senior Management Team and develop contingencies.

Supervisory / Management Responsibility

  • Works independently or Individual Contributor.


The following level of education provides a necessary foundation for this Job function:

  • A third level qualification in a relevant discipline. Diploma or Grad Diploma in Project Management would be an advantage.


The following experience provides a necessary foundation for this Job function:

  • Working within a highly regulated manufacturing environment with project management skills as this provides a good foundation for this job function.

  • Strong strategy development and planning skills coupled with necessary knowledge of diagnostics technical, manufacturing and supply activities.

  • Demonstrated team player and ability to work in a globally oriented work environment.

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in areas such as: Operations, Engineering, Technical Support, Quality, Project Management, R&D or Supply Chain.

  • Strong project experience and an ability to influence others are essential.

  • Lean Six Sigma Experience / Certified Green Belt or equivalent preferred.


  • The position will coordinate resources and provide leadership to a cross functional team.
