Alexion Pharmaceuticals Head of Automation in Ireland

Position Summary

The Manufacturing Systems Manager is responsible for leading a team of engineers to support, improve and manage all automated manufacturing systems across a large bio-pharma manufacturing facility. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated, results focused individual with excellent communication/interpersonal skills.

Principal Responsibilities

  • To propose, implement and manage the site's manufacturing systems

  • To lead, mentor and manage the internal automation team and external contractors

  • To recommend the organisational solutions enabling optimising the site's manufacturing systems

  • To ensure the co-ordination, research and implementation of manufacturing systems projects through optimising all of the resources at his/her disposal and respecting deadlines

  • To take a lead role in directing the site leadership on future system requirements to support the site strategy

  • Be accountable for the long term strategic planning for the manufacturing systems and the internal automation team

  • Participate, influence and implement global strategies that deliver business efficiency, growth and enhancements

  • Deliver processes that ensure all systems are kept in a compliant state

  • Enforce quality driven methodologies for implementing changes and managing manufacturing systems

  • Collaborate with other departments to provide solutions and efficiencies for the business

  • Engage with global functions to define standards for Alexion Manufacturing sites

  • Accountable for operational readiness, operational risk reduction, high availability, and business continuity for critical site infrastructure systems, including virtual infrastructure, data historians, manufacturing execution and control systems


  • Minimum 10 years of experience as an automation engineer, with at least 2 years of people management experience.

  • Experience in implementing and managing GxP systems

  • Experience working in a life sciences (or biotech) manufacturing plant, plus detailed knowledge of cGMP and computer systems validation (GAMP)

  • Experience of the DeltaV Process Control System is a must with additional knowledge of the Siemens platform of programmable controllers a plus

  • Knowledge and administration of data historians is beneficial

  • Knowledge of networks, Ethernet and Profibus

  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written) with the ability to effectively communicate IT/Automation concepts and business values to non-IT people

  • Project management experience


  • Minimum : Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or Engineering
